Mod Podge - Friend or Foe?

So, I have a Dora toy box in my garage.  It looks a lot like this...
It's wood & sturdy.
It's also ugly and all wrong for my classroom.
I thought about sanding it, priming it, and painting it...
Maybe something like this - turquoise, corals and white with a cushion and a pillow.

Or, like this, turquoise white wash.  Of course, it won't be a treasure chest.

Or this might be really cute.  Turquoise bottom and chevron lid.  Loving it.

Then...I found this pic.  It's mod podge, an old book & tissue paper...cute!!  Of course, everything I mod podge is sticky.  Ick.

What do you guys think?
Is mod podge your friend or foe?

I have done a lot of Modge Podge in the past, but nothing that I was going to sit on. What was the weather like when it was turning our sticky? I know sometimes if it is humid, the humidity affects the drying process. Just a thought. I have a toy box that has jungle designs on it. I have wanted to redo it also. I have been unsure what to do because it looks like it has a thick coat of poly urethane (sp?) on it. I'll be interested to see how yours turns out!

I've seen a spray that you can spray over Modge Podge to make it not sticky. I forget the name of it, but it was near the Modge Podge. I've never used it myself, so I can't make any claims, but I think it would be worth checking out! I have also seen the chair and considered making something like it for my room next year.
