I have spent August working on my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/This-Little-Piggy-Reads">TPT Store</a>. I wanted to share my new "look". I am trying to make my store more cohesive. What do you think? I like the way it's looking so far. I think my covers are bright, but not overwhelming. </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hey there friends in bloggie world! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Great News...this is a blog hop! Better News...You Can Win TpT Gift Cards!! Whoop! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">If this is your first visit to my blog, I'm Deniece from This Little Piggy Reads and I'm a GT Specialist in Texas. For 3 years I taught 3rd Grade Reading and I began this blog to share ideas and strategies with Upper Elementary Teachers. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My heart belongs in Upper Elementary! Yes, there are standardized tests, but tests don't scare me. Bloggie World is full of Primary blogs, but this hop celebrates & showcases Upper Elementary teacher bloggers. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Most Upper Elementary classrooms in my area are departmentalized. So teachers see multiple classes throughout the day, not just 1 homeroom all day. It can quickly become overwhelming - especially grading. My solution was to color code EVERYTHING! I taught 3 classes and my classes were assigned colors according to their turn-in baskets. Mine were pink (red journals), green and blue. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b><u>What did I color code?</u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Folders</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Journals</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Grading </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Portfolios</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Student Names on Classwork & Homework</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Binder Clips for Paperwork</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Tabs in my Grade book </span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Of course my folders & journals were color coded. The pink class was pink/red because 3rd grade boys don't like pink (who knew?). When my students turned in their assignments, they highlighted their names in the appropriate color. I used sticky notes to organize my gradebook. I hope my color coding tip helps you start the year out organized!</span></div>

I was "gung-ho" Monday morning and began to write a post about my dreams. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As I began reflecting on my TpT Store, I realized that I needed more time. More time to think about what TpT had already given us. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Truthfully, I didn't realize what a huge blessing TpT has been for my family. I debated - should I share what I've used my TpT earnings for? I'm a blogger, AKA Oversharer. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Well, my little store has had some flatline months and some pretty amazing months. I'm grateful for every follower who purchased an item from my store. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Even now, I am shocked that other teachers value the products that I make. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">TpT has had a <i>huge</i> impact on our family. There are months when my TpT income has bought groceries for our family. Those months I am the most grateful for TpT. <b>I am serious. </b></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The rest of this post will focus on my goals for the next two years. Fall 2015 - Summer 2017.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvOlagE75JaF5BBae9JxM1_KPTQj24WlTD8-_tH5ssd9WyR0YZyrXMkv5tL8vv6h3WC7dvfa-OSHWnrzo5jeTnpv3aipHtG5omJB7GhK0y4KLrMWKlrVxJWPhvh74cpE7S52K2GZMk4sU5/s1600/mexico.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvOlagE75JaF5BBae9JxM1_KPTQj24WlTD8-_tH5ssd9WyR0YZyrXMkv5tL8vv6h3WC7dvfa-OSHWnrzo5jeTnpv3aipHtG5omJB7GhK0y4KLrMWKlrVxJWPhvh74cpE7S52K2GZMk4sU5/s640/mexico.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next year we are celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary and we are going to Cancun to celebrate. TpT has made this dream a reality for us. Neither of us have ever been to a resort, nor been to Cancun so we're pretty psyched! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Right now, we have carpet and tile in our house. I HATE CARPET, especially 10 year old carpet that has survived 2 toddlers and 1 puppy! I want new hardwood floors. Well, okay not REAL hardwood. I'd like wood laminate floors. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My Girl is 6 and talks about going to Disney atleast once a week. I am not an amusement park type girl and I've heard that the Disney Cruise is absolutely fantastic! So, I am thinking that is a better option for us. Not sure how realistic this goal is, but let's dream big!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">As far as my store goes, I'd LOVE to be a top 100 seller in Texas. Right now I think I'm still in the 400's. Which is an improvement, but I really want to break the top 100! </span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">TPT has been a very unexpected blessing in our life.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Thank You to anyone who has ever made a purchase from my store. </span></div>

I'm on Instagram, but I rarely post. Because my life is pretty boring! <br />
<br />
Two things happened in my house today that were IG worthy. First, all of our laundry was washed, dried, folded or hung up & put away!!! Snore! But I'm happy. The 2nd IG item was Dora, one of our tadpoles grew legs. Now, that was pretty cool & I was going to post it, but I cannot for the life of me remember all of the hashtags I'm supposed to use. <br />
<br />
I'm sure IG is pretty awesome & I love the artsy pics by Taecher Bloggers, but it's just not me. <br />

So, when I heard about the #tptsellerchallenge, I jumped on board! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">My #1 BEST SELLER is my Inventor/Inventions Brochure. I haven't changed the cover in 2 years because...well, because it's been selling just fine. But, I decided it was time to change it. Over the last year, I've been thinking about adding a lap book component and this was the perfect time to add it. Of course, I ran out of ink, so I couldn't add pics to the file, but I will do that next week.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">What do you think about the new cover??</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In an effort to hold myself accountable for fulfilling the #tptsellerchallenge, I am posting my STATS. Truthfully STATS are controversial. Some people put a lot of stock into them. I prefer to grow my followers organically and I want my followers to be people who need my help or want to hear what I have to say - not just people who agree to follow me for no apparent reason. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjgDDEBMlzg9EZZNMG_Zi39mkZF-sqIwt9zwRPkvEaHQZKkLWqaATN7Ibj0gxiKMEDOINEZiobr2E-C3wPU2pElsRJ-gatVwkew2srgE3fjYsqJWR0QLno6DhJbwaSI0m_cF-4ChUfn2DJ/s1600/Poetry+fun+header.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjgDDEBMlzg9EZZNMG_Zi39mkZF-sqIwt9zwRPkvEaHQZKkLWqaATN7Ibj0gxiKMEDOINEZiobr2E-C3wPU2pElsRJ-gatVwkew2srgE3fjYsqJWR0QLno6DhJbwaSI0m_cF-4ChUfn2DJ/s1600/Poetry+fun+header.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Hoppy Spring! A.K.A. Allergy season in my house. I woke up this morning with puffy eyes, my husband said I looked like a frog! Yup, a frog. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">This weekend, we're celebrating poetry. Teaching poetry didn't come natural to me. So, I had to pack my teacher toolbox full of little tricks of the trade. Take a peek inside my Pinterest Poetry Toolbox.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/lovemyli/poetry-toolbox/" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://marketingland.com/wp-content/ml-loads/2014/07/pinterest-logo-white-1920.png" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span><span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I love seeing kids write little poems about the things they love. I also love seeing kids become authors. Today, I'm going to show you how to make a brown bag book. <b>I PROMISE if you make this with your students and hang it in the hallway you are guaranteed to get "Oooh's and Aaaah's" from your colleagues and parents.</b> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="clear: left; float: left; font-size: x-large; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBImsmvmfx-LFhu6cknhMONTwV30ALC1nT7eJGXjT1Wi2v6dj1yl9Ri-eimUjHoDCmCmGh-I3UXcBthoBR3ECg3sFjBWv5mJV_AxfZgVMbYLR72_UZXpUyxmfzCPEAryfYqgK8WoCU2v7H/s1600/bag+to+book.png" height="488" width="640" /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The materials you'll need are: 3 lunch sized paper bags per student, scissors & a rubberband (ribbon is optional). </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br />
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Begin by cutting the ends off of each paper bag. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1LvEY1Cx5kJgLS8G-G4Mvf6n879ltUtN7l3V15Td-Vmi4aEPNy-n98osSCPtuJsa-CDbBWXFAPW74WpCXv9lYWNOMxjLXp-RUYXmZjV75j4zAhVyY6-CrNAh0AxjnEQl1tHLezZgsKBwu/s1600/IMG_0855.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1LvEY1Cx5kJgLS8G-G4Mvf6n879ltUtN7l3V15Td-Vmi4aEPNy-n98osSCPtuJsa-CDbBWXFAPW74WpCXv9lYWNOMxjLXp-RUYXmZjV75j4zAhVyY6-CrNAh0AxjnEQl1tHLezZgsKBwu/s1600/IMG_0855.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large; text-align: left;">Next, line up all 3 bags, fold into a booklet, cut about an inch slit into each end and slide the rubberband into place.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm a Texan, born and raised, North Texas is where I spent most of my days! Yes, I love Will Smith and no, he's not a Texan. <br />
Currently, I live in Waxahachie (wax-uh-hatch-ee). I moved here when I got married about 9 years ago. It is a small historic town, south of DFW with impressive landmarks and a thriving bed and breakfast business. You might have heard about it recently because Jon Kitna is now our head football coach.<br />

Waxahachie's courthouse is one of the oldest courthouses in Texas. It was refurbished in 2002 with sandstone from the same quarry that was used in the 1800's to build the original. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is an exact replica of the Munster Mansion.</td></tr>

Have you ever watched the Munsters? Well, a couple in Waxahachie built an exact replica of the Munster's Home. It's actually right down the street from my daughter's old daycare and I drove by it daily; however, I've never been inside. During Halloween, they have a charity event where you can tour the mansion and the owners dress up like the Munster family.<br />

I have lots of lessons that I love! What matters is that my students love design challenges. In my gifted pull-out classroom we do them daily. Students are collaborating, problem solving, inferring, designing, hypothesising, researching and re-designing. The really awesome thing about design challenges is....you don't need to buy a lot of supplies. </div>

<br />
I know these ideas are grade specific; however, your entire school can participate! You can host a 100 Days parade and have each grade level do something different. <br />
*dress up like they are 100<br />
*wear 100 day crowns<br />
*make a shirt that has 100 items on it<br />
*make a poster with 100 things <br />
*create posters of different ways to make 100<br />
If the entire school doesn't want to participate, maybe PK-2 can celebrate and walk down the "big kids" hallway. <br />

So, I found a few items I thought I'd share with you. </span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">If you're the "crafty mom" or just enjoy making things...I think any teacher will enjoy these. </span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/270567890082901231/"></a> </span> <span style="color: #e06666;"> </span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/65513369549156956/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">I found these pencils last year and I loved them! I think this is a <strike>cheap</strike> great idea if you have multiple kids and/or multiple teachers to buy for! </span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/21744010676917258/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">Is your child's teacher girly? If so, these will go over well. </span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/535787686890366065/"></a> </span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/420242208953436885/"></a> </span> <span style="color: #e06666;"> <br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">If you're low on money this Valentine's season, here are a few thoughtful, but low cost gifts. </span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/196539971212489373/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/133771051407943297/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/24277285463135553/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">What if your child has a male teacher? What do you do? I found a couple of pins that I thought might work. </span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/81205599506026648/"></a> </span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/81205599505709537/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">And finally, if you're like me and you tend to give school supplies, germ-x or tissues as gifts - at least make them look cute!</span><br />
<span style="color: #e06666;"><a data-pin-do="embedPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/270286415106698598/"></a><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;"><br />
</span> <span style="color: #e06666;">This Little Piggy hopes you got an idea for your child's teacher! </span><br />

<span style="color: #141823; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 17.5636348724365px;">When I was in the regular education classroom, I saw 3 classes of Reading/Language Arts throughout the day. By my 3rd class, the kids were playing "ants in my pants" and moving around in their seat constantly. It was like one of those TV cartoons where the kids are staring at the clock and waiting for lunch or recess. </span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">

<span style="color: #141823; line-height: 17.5636348724365px;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I began using "round-the-room" review activities. At the time, I would find articles or short stories and write questions that were aligned to my teaching standard of the week. Groups would move from station to station and answer the questions. As time went on, I began making these Round-the-Room activities and selling them on TpT. They have become very popular and teachers love that students get to move around the classroom. All of my Round-the-Room activities are CCSS and TEKS aligned. Today, I am offering my newest Round-the-Room focusing on Figurative Language for FREE during our Winter Wonderland Blog Hop! This pack is perfect for 4th/5th Grade teachers. </span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">My sanity saver is Bell Work. It gives my students something to do while I'm getting things adjusted and drinking my coffee. When I taught 3rd Grade Reading, my class began at 7:45! <i style="font-weight: bold;">Who's idea was it to start school before I finished my coffee? </i>I relied heavily on Bell Work. My usual Bell Work was a short passage and questions that spiral reviewed the past few weeks of standards. I like this format because it allows most students to be successful and it spotlights the students who need a little extra help. </span></div>

Do you need a few new ideas to spruce up your reading instruction? Today is your day! A few of my bloggie friends and I are celebrating the new school year with some tips and tricks we use in our own classrooms. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today, I am going to share a creative graphic organizer strategy that I like to use with informational text. I am a big fan of graphic organizers and Thinking Maps. I think they help with both comprehension and critical thinking skills. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Two years ago, our 4th and 5th Graders took a Field Trip to NASA in Houston. Although my 3rd Graders couldn't attend the field trip, there was a lot of buzz about all things NASA. So, we studied Ellen Ochoa and made pencil rockets. This is the graphic organizer we used. </div>

I have been teaching eleven years and more years than not I have had an<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>UGLY Classroom</b></span></div>
You heard me right, "UGLY." The first few years I taught Middle School. Middle School Teachers don't decorate very elaborately. In fact, if they put up a few cute or pretty bulletin boards and other teachers come around and ooohhh and aaahhh all over them. <br />
<br />
Fast forward a few years when I was teaching Elementary School. Pinterest wasn't around back then. Someone thought they were saving me from my ugly classroom & suggested I choose a theme. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-size: x-large;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Oh, a theme. Great idea!! </b></span><b> </b></span></div>
So I did what any good teacher would do. I went to my local teacher store and I found a theme I liked (Hollywood Movies) and I bought all of the posters, decorations, border and even a matching calendar set. I decorated in black, red, yellow and splashes of silver. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>HATED it. </b></span></div>
So, how did I become <i>#decorating unchallenged</i>? Pinterest of course!! These tips are things I have learned throughout the years through trial and error. I am by no means claim to be a professional decorator. Remember, these tips are for beginners who want to create a cohesive learning environment. If you're passed that point, these tips might seem mundane. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKmk7DXfzbgxNFiDqpw7VvkSZtbEV9lK2_HWwJB05J1ir3zwXJcC1UsdR_b8ZSvNPeY_oe2MYKvLCvl461CP7r8ekQjiJlavstNW4KPfvHvGKmme6FG56fG2QNma8366eFtDQkV5BygC_T/s1600/decor+tips.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKmk7DXfzbgxNFiDqpw7VvkSZtbEV9lK2_HWwJB05J1ir3zwXJcC1UsdR_b8ZSvNPeY_oe2MYKvLCvl461CP7r8ekQjiJlavstNW4KPfvHvGKmme6FG56fG2QNma8366eFtDQkV5BygC_T/s1600/decor+tips.png" height="640" width="486" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlZUcmhjVUltr3yQmCOu_IFV0bZlekV8LIgDxo3cadSN2dlZPoW8QmVgXhC8lKqa4YkvkcXPUhTdFijuGKzTghAdJXsuaoOC6ZRVNfftnxCmjdGCIhFgbu0JeGVBh9MRxK7ORc0MI9UGqX/s1600/decor+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlZUcmhjVUltr3yQmCOu_IFV0bZlekV8LIgDxo3cadSN2dlZPoW8QmVgXhC8lKqa4YkvkcXPUhTdFijuGKzTghAdJXsuaoOC6ZRVNfftnxCmjdGCIhFgbu0JeGVBh9MRxK7ORc0MI9UGqX/s1600/decor+1.png" height="199" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Start with a plan. This is going to look different for everyone. I print everything out & put it together in a folder. It might seem overwhelming to the <i>#decorating challenged</i> but you can do it in a weekend. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My plan:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">-make a list of my "must haves" (ie: word walls, objectives board, centers, etc...)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">-sketch out the layout of my classroom</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">-use pinterest to find inspiration</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">-print example bulletin boards</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">-</span><span style="text-align: center;">sketch out the bulletin boards that I want & label them with colors</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwFgCk_A4j9Lr6NbeVsyJAzzdDx-z7hGAjafuGyjxG-a4I-eJZsoon-FaxXd3QIqya4qCTWOS5HDCalitFmdQ1hiAUFmyXTsLlLHAX-7LuABEqpE7w8hkdi63OBxEicHQA8Nkt7xXlCmuU/s1600/final.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwFgCk_A4j9Lr6NbeVsyJAzzdDx-z7hGAjafuGyjxG-a4I-eJZsoon-FaxXd3QIqya4qCTWOS5HDCalitFmdQ1hiAUFmyXTsLlLHAX-7LuABEqpE7w8hkdi63OBxEicHQA8Nkt7xXlCmuU/s1600/final.png" height="307" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ZT41ZLWojlDi7OWfRqn1BvwUxKvFUM26N_DyHh2xj-gMQKHQXKMZVcLnNqhzbYf0GGijSYoVSK-UALkoUktMloezKO7Ef01YCHxdmaCZJFTY494_qbIzKXIPinFmRgdzQgfyMwOV0M2r/s1600/decor+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4ZT41ZLWojlDi7OWfRqn1BvwUxKvFUM26N_DyHh2xj-gMQKHQXKMZVcLnNqhzbYf0GGijSYoVSK-UALkoUktMloezKO7Ef01YCHxdmaCZJFTY494_qbIzKXIPinFmRgdzQgfyMwOV0M2r/s1600/decor+2.png" height="199" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Decide on your anchor color - black, brown, charcoal, white, navy (furniture might dictate this). Choose 2 -3 accent colors. These might be dependent upon the butcher paper at your school. If you don't want to use butcher paper, fabric is a great choice as well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I lean toward lime/turquoise/pink...but when I moved into my new classroom last year I found an UGLY orange wall. So, my colors changed a bit. I went with lime/aqua/tangerine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihn68FYow7-BaPv-7bqt_gaMORjSK9wB40cLFvMZqnr1O5MP1cY_rCQ9Xy5uoMe6b68DO0F_3NFEEEQ9ni_eAkxFjhAv7-Rp-9kz-k0iopeS3QREe5CyPrDmDxNdLTdXcjdCzXhzeytYUf/s1600/decor+3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihn68FYow7-BaPv-7bqt_gaMORjSK9wB40cLFvMZqnr1O5MP1cY_rCQ9Xy5uoMe6b68DO0F_3NFEEEQ9ni_eAkxFjhAv7-Rp-9kz-k0iopeS3QREe5CyPrDmDxNdLTdXcjdCzXhzeytYUf/s1600/decor+3.png" height="199" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm specifically talking about bulletin boards now (they might already be in your room or you might make them). With my current position, I am in and out of a lot of classrooms in a variety of grade levels. The biggest mistake I see when I walk into rooms is random colored bulletin boards with wild borders - all mismatched and crazy looking. If you want to do seasonal or decorative borders, I would highly suggest covering your bulletin boards in your anchor color. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the best results, go with 2 colors of butcher paper (the anchor color & 1 accent) and 1 or 2 colors of border. An example of this was when I did brown & sky blue butcher paper with apple green/white polka-dot and pink borderette. It was so calming! It wasn't too girly. I made some little birdies out of scrapbook paper and used them to decorate. It was my favorite room so far. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Buying things from a teacher store isn't horrible. But, I remember one day a mentor teacher telling me, " I can't explain it but your room looks cold and her (a teacher friend) room looks warm and inviting." YES, I do hate it when administration compare teachers. It creates a competitive culture not a supportive culture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What makes it warm and inviting? A few hand-made things. Start with 3 hand-made items. </div>

Today, I'm going to show you how I made a cute Classroom Library/Reading Center Pillow that brings that comfortable, homey feeling to my classroom. My students love to use the pillows when they read. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Today we are winding down my Behavior Management Mini-Series. Today's topic is one I am incredibly interested in because it has a parent notification element. Parent Communication is kind of a "buzz word" at my school. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.classdojo.com/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDiKV0PRkjQl_DxiTSEMgTCDm90Uie3kXBAh8RUMPxnjJ9p8W3K28sZokxFyKCiamFoBQ6z92-TvA3sGXtstAD8FhhUd2fTqShlSRC8FUFntoZBo-uwihd2NU4bjOi0iPl-_oE1PeLGWxx/s1600/classdojo.PNG" height="192" width="640"></span></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> Today we're looking at <a href="http://www.classdojo.com/" target="_blank">Class Dojo.</a> Since the website pretty much holds your hand and walks you through how to set it up and how to use it in your classroom, I wanted to get real teacher's opinions about how it worked for them - what they liked, what they didn't like, etc...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I interviewed 7 teachers from a variety of elementary grades and 7 out of 7 said they used it and liked it!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">All 7 teachers said that their students enjoyed hearing the little dings knowing that someone earned a point. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Last year I read a parent written article about ClassDojo that claimed it made her child feel bad to hear the dings. So, I was a bit worried that it would be a negative reinforcement, but all 7 teachers interviewed said it was much more of a Positive Reinforcement. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm smack dab in the middle of my Blog Mini-Series: Behavior Management. I've learned after 10 years that the magic of a behavior plan is to go in with a plan! It takes multiple components to make it work. <span style="color: #8e7cc3; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>High expectations, routines, communication and teamwork. </b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Imagine this: I'm a 3rd Grade Teacher, it's the end of the 2nd 6-weeks and about 99% of my kiddos understand and follow our classroom rules/procedures. PERFECT! Well, now it's the week before Thanksgiving and all of a sudden those<b><span style="color: #8e7cc3;"> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">little Monsters are coming out</span></span></b>!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTSt3KYOV2rUkZzTslaMGU0suDvqWqLV6BrD_rkmf5LkJuO186JA1Fa7ecHzvgEhjVyFLT8_iHcyHrYXNcD-fGhmI2PnsEmL9zOEAFgbzI5dj9SHcV4RIwy0eyOuyzSpW3Ir8zY4C7ya6B/s1600/MONSTERS4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTSt3KYOV2rUkZzTslaMGU0suDvqWqLV6BrD_rkmf5LkJuO186JA1Fa7ecHzvgEhjVyFLT8_iHcyHrYXNcD-fGhmI2PnsEmL9zOEAFgbzI5dj9SHcV4RIwy0eyOuyzSpW3Ir8zY4C7ya6B/s1600/MONSTERS4.png" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm pretty sure you know what I'm talking about. They can't walk down the hall in a straight line, they are chatting a little more than normal during group work and they feel a little too comfortable with you and start pushing buttons. <b><span style="color: #674ea7; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"> </span><span style="color: #8e7cc3; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Am I the only one</span></b>? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few years ago I heard myself say, "I know that you understand the hallway expectations, but you aren't following them. Why not?" When I went home, I scoured Pinterest and found a few solutions. First, I found the Classroom Elf. Ahh, cute idea, but it isn't Christmas time yet. I also found the idea to put letters on my (then) chalkboard that spelled N-O-I-S-E and take a letter away each time the students "got too loud or didn't follow directions". Then, they would lose a privilege.<span style="color: #8e7cc3; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b> It didn't work for my kids</b></span>. They need positive reinforcement, not negative. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took the strategy and tweaked it to work for me. I put the letters P-A-R-T-Y on pieces of construction paper and every time my class (whole-group) followed directions in the hallway, they would earn a letter. If they earned all of their letters by Friday, we would have a party. They did and I brought Little Debbie Snacks, but my 3rd Graders NEVER got snack time, so <b><span style="color: #8e7cc3; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">they loved it</span></b>! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I want you to know that on a day-to-day basis, I don't hold the whole group responsible for behavior. <span style="color: #8e7cc3;"><b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">I believe in personal responsibilit</span></b><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>y</b></span></span>. I also don't enjoy punishing the "great student" when they were great all day long. So this incentive doesn't affect each student's daily behavior log. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's be serious, it's a bribe or a ploy. And I am well aware that it <b><span style="color: #8e7cc3; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">doesn't work in every school </span></b>or for every teacher. It works in my school and my principal supports/encourages it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If your students need a little behavior incentive prior to a Holiday Break, I've made a special pack just for you! For the month of July, the pack is $1! In August it will return to regular price. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next, I found <a href="http://www.bouncyballs.org/">www.bouncyballs.org</a> an online site that allows your students to self-monitor. As the balls, bubbles or eyeballs jump up & down it lets the kids see how loud they are being. I picked the eyes because I thought this would be great in the Fall around Halloween!! How cute! FYI - make sure you let the kids get loud, otherwise they will on purpose to see the balls jump around. <div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm continuing my Behavior Management Mini-Series today. As you read yesterday, I am a fan of the clip chart. Not just the clip chart, but the clip chart as part of a working system that you, your students, your team & the parents all understand. But, <b><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">what happens when you don't have a "normal" classroom?</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I moved positions <strike>not a shocker </strike>to my dream job of teaching an enrichment pull-out class for GT Students. <span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>I love my job!</b></span> <a href="http://littlepiggyreads.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-little-eoy-reflection-on-teaching.html" target="_blank">In this blog entry</a>, I discussed a few issues I encountered with this position. The main issue I experienced was that I saw my students at max 4 times per month. I have pretty high expectations for following classroom procedures and I felt as if I was teaching them every time I saw the students. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEpF_BaHZQLRwoiAPE8IKp464WXD8fDAD3-q5YeDmab2akPsWYLqXAUJ2eeVDU9BWQsyWNLTqRvkRwEqvnR_QdXFz_mVtlGiZjorbqd-oJHGxUBG2vOW047Cptj5_EqZgXlCTZHNEo5nfG/s1600/clipchart+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEpF_BaHZQLRwoiAPE8IKp464WXD8fDAD3-q5YeDmab2akPsWYLqXAUJ2eeVDU9BWQsyWNLTqRvkRwEqvnR_QdXFz_mVtlGiZjorbqd-oJHGxUBG2vOW047Cptj5_EqZgXlCTZHNEo5nfG/s1600/clipchart+2.jpg" height="400" width="290" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got this position in August of 2013. So, I had everything planned out for my classroom and suddenly, I had to <span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>change it all</b></span>!! I didn't see 3 classes per day, I saw 1 class each day. I changed things up, but decided to keep the clip chart. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2lzqxC0wbRTeSOiszWrMkly7JDos-bifaH3LWxWXBGho247ngcxBnjCD3ncN33V7ZtE-P1FjC7G8aw56_uqXHALAd8ScYw9uyTZasUT6fV51yMcqSRRVYkSSn8ub48SDm1iiY1hNvcRZg/s1600/weekly+pins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2lzqxC0wbRTeSOiszWrMkly7JDos-bifaH3LWxWXBGho247ngcxBnjCD3ncN33V7ZtE-P1FjC7G8aw56_uqXHALAd8ScYw9uyTZasUT6fV51yMcqSRRVYkSSn8ub48SDm1iiY1hNvcRZg/s1600/weekly+pins.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I put each day's clips into zipper pouches and labeled them for each day I had a class. I also assigned 1 person per day to be in charge of putting their clips in the zipper pouch and putting the next day's clips on the chart at the end of the day. It turned out, <b><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">5th Graders didn't really buy into the clip chart </span></b>like my 3rd Graders did. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
**Disclaimer**</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't have a lot of behavior issues. I only saw my students once a week, it was a project based classroom that encouraged groups to talk and explore. I also used a lot of technology & let's be serious, technology =engagement. I did have a few issues with one class in particular, which I attribute to the school norms/expectations at their home school. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, next year I've been throwing around the idea of implementing<b><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"> "behavior tags". </span></b> I have over 60 students per week, so I need to figure out how the students will keep up with the tags and what incentives I should have. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another option for next year is Class Dojo. <b><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Join me Friday as I interview other teachers and find out how they liked Class Dojo.</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Welcome to Day 2 of my Blog Mini-Series: Behavior Management. Yesterday I blogged about what didn't work. Today, I'm going to blog about what did work (some years)! <br />
<br />
I've mentioned about a thousand times that I've taught a lot of different grade levels. For those of you who don't know...I've taught PK, K, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th & 7th. People ask me which was my favorite - it was 3rd, hands down! <br />
<br />
When my team began teaching those little 2nd graders we knew we would loop up to 3rd grade with them. We also knew that we would be facing a new state assessment - The STAAR. They were a rough bunch, not to mention that it was FULL of TK's (teacher's kids). Plus, we began 2nd Grade self-contained and in January we switched to departmentalized. My school does this in 2nd Grade & it stinks for everyone involved - kids, parents and teachers!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instrucology.com/wp-content/uploads/token_economy.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://instrucology.com/wp-content/uploads/token_economy.gif" height="256" width="320" /></a></div>
We needed a lot of structure. I knew the **key** to behavior for this group was positive incentives. I began with a token system where kids would gain tokens for good choices (behavior, bringing in homework, teamwork, etc...). I made it work for a self-contained classroom but when we switched to departmentalized, I couldn't keep up. Oddly enough, the kids were really disappointed -- they loved those gold tokens. One of the main issues we faced was the increase in transition time. There was a lot of time wasted in the hallway waiting on the next class. Little 2nd graders had to gather supplies, switch classes, settle down again, get settled and switch their brain from ending one class to beginning a new class. The parents didn't understand 3 different sets of rules and neither did the kids. They would get in trouble in 1 teacher's classroom and not in the other 2 classrooms. Which leads parents to believe it is the teacher's fault. UGH...<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
We were not strangers to the clip chart. In fact, our school began using it a few years prior. But, it was known as negative reinforcement. I knew our team needed a cohesive behavior system. I introduced my team to the "move-up clip chart". I made identical charts. We all used them. The clip chart moved with the kids. It didn't stay with the teacher. The kids even took the chart to P.E., Music and Art. We all agreed that if our students moved their clip down, they could earn a move up. We also agreed that if they landed on purple they would immediately earn a prize (usually a pencil or an eraser). Our school provided an <a href="http://www.schoolmate.com/student-planners/" target="_blank">agenda </a>for each student. So, every teacher wrote/signed the agendas daily and parents were expected to sign them daily as well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
When we looped to 3rd Grade, as a team we implemented a few items to increase structure with this group. First, a voice level chart. </div>

Finally, we also began sending a weekly Newsletter. I e-mailed it to our parents. It inspired my Classroom Newsletters. They are editable so you can save them and send them electronically or print & send them. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Monthly-Teacher-Newsletters-editable-760957" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8OCe6vqEpjPhSOiU4awplsnEoS9EOneRcna2hz_uyC-g3Knrt5vsjXClfCLg8hMFgg0bfDNOUhIy63XJIugwjBskHG2IB2hN2PYiMRVbkBPvrKKqne5sdcUgKBQgxZNbdeuymAxiSwZEc/s1600/cvr+page.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
This is what I call a "System". It is many components that work together and create a plan of action for teachers, students and parents. It wasn't the clip chart that made everything work. It was the teachers working as a team to create a streamlined system of expectations for the students. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check back tomorrow when I discuss how the Clip Chart didn't work with another classroom. <br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">This Little Piggy wonders, have you ever used a clip chart? Did it work for you? </span></b> <br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">This week, I plan to present a quick blog series all about the lessons I've learned concerning a pretty </span>controversial<span style="font-family: inherit;"> topic: </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKLgiYISmiGErhjsFZoNY48-uLbNBJV8SImzrDZKEyJgijKhvUXbJq8wmNf00vcv0clZ-w3Q6m0OOqgedNumK8UNa_C5V_-Z1kc8-fkMjPdzfGkdX31k_EDvBBZO6fNqMuOwxuHCH0m1W0/s1600/mngt.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKLgiYISmiGErhjsFZoNY48-uLbNBJV8SImzrDZKEyJgijKhvUXbJq8wmNf00vcv0clZ-w3Q6m0OOqgedNumK8UNa_C5V_-Z1kc8-fkMjPdzfGkdX31k_EDvBBZO6fNqMuOwxuHCH0m1W0/s1600/mngt.png" height="151" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I am of the philosophy that every class (depending on the year, depending on the teacher, depending on the school) needs a different management plan. I also think that some students need their own plan, but I admit I'm </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-size: x-large;">NOT PERFECT</span></b> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">& I have a difficult time implementing personal plans. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In my 10 years of teaching I've taught so many different grade levels and such different types of classrooms that I know there is </span><b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">NOT a "Magic Plan"</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> that works for all. So, this post is not about some "Magic Plan" you've never heard of. </span><i style="font-family: inherit;">I wholeheartedly believe that teacher prep/planning & student engagement plays a HUGE role in the management plan. </i><br />
<i style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></i>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>Rewind 10 years</b></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> to my very first year teaching. I taught at a Junior High School with 50 minute class periods, no more than 18 kids in a classroom and a male principal who carried a paddle around the halls. </span><b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"> #easiestjobever </span></b><b style="font-family: inherit;"> </b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Did I mention we had a Special Ed teacher, so I only had general education students and GT students. I didn't need a management plan. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Imagine 4 years later when I was thrown into a Kindergarten classroom, 3 weeks after school began with no aide and 24 students. </span><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b> </b></span><b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">#teacherintrouble</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;">I was assigned a mentor. I know what you're thinking...ahhh salvation! Nope. Don't get me wrong, she is an awesome teacher! But, everything comes natural to her. I needed direct instruction. "When Jakobe leaves the alphabet center and goes to the dramatic play center, you need to do XYZ." She would come watch my class & didn't understand why I couldn't just run a classroom. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Which made me feel like a </span><b style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-large;">horrible teacher!</b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Looking back, I see the issue she didn't. DUH. My 7th Graders never went to centers and pretty much came to me with social skills and understood how school worked. Kindergarteners needed me to teach them these things. </span><b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">Why didn't she just tell me this?</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I turned to the internet and I found a few blogs that gave me some insight. I ended putting names on my rug and finding something like the color card pocket chart below. It did it's job. But let's be serious a color chart isn't a behavior plan. And did you know that when a Kindergartener can't read their own name, they will just choose any name and pull the card? </span><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;"><b>#whoknew?</b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/57/4b/82/574b82d981c0eaea122f659332b022ca.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/57/4b/82/574b82d981c0eaea122f659332b022ca.jpg" height="320" width="276" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">After 10 years of teaching, I've done a lot of reflecting. Now that I am a Mom to an almost Kindergartener, I realize </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">that the behavior issues were pretty much </span><b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">all my fault</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit;">. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">So, here is a quick list of things I know would have improved my classroom behavior. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW3j9OhtGxYy6brQizSOQ8z77r4KhMIF3X_dKLq0BPQmvKjtmBf8YVtXs42jCjPFhUS2br3LkfSrNaHCLKmymiPDkCza-rn2YNR8fYQCYVXc9WC5viUbNb1HC2swc5618J7FeB-E1oh_V3/s1600/mistakes.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW3j9OhtGxYy6brQizSOQ8z77r4KhMIF3X_dKLq0BPQmvKjtmBf8YVtXs42jCjPFhUS2br3LkfSrNaHCLKmymiPDkCza-rn2YNR8fYQCYVXc9WC5viUbNb1HC2swc5618J7FeB-E1oh_V3/s1600/mistakes.png" height="640" width="440" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I read this list of 5 things, I'm actually embarrassed that I didn't know better. I knock myself on the head and think, "DOH, of course I should have taught procedures!" But, I honestly didn't know better. When we know better, we do better. I read amazing Kindergarten Blogs now and I am in "AH" of how seemless their classrooms run. Mine was a wreck. The good news...at the end of the year, I had 99% of my students reading on Grade Level. I had the pleasure of teaching the same students in 3rd Grade & guess what? The vast majority could <b><span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-large;">READ ON GRADE LEVEL</span></b>! So, although my behavior management plan left something to be desired, my instruction was effective. Maybe I wasn't so bad after all! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><span style="color: #e06666;">This Little Piggy thinks reflection is possibly the most valuable teaching practice. </span></b></div>

But, we had a busy 4th Weekend, so we are putting everything else off and having a relaxing family day.<br />
<br />
I decided I would blog daily for the month of July. FAIL. I already missed a day. But in order to blog daily, I need topics! So, this week I'm presenting a blog mini-series about different aspects of:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidZWfiHlK-EPkgui9kP0f4EMNrkPiECEWCl0bR3xoKXL_J0vpTX4xCjyCZALG3Z8gvll8jmkXVDxgtceyOjsqo1mbYyyrh8XEG6CcncAEjW7ZtcZ2nIekoSSFOTSlY53XoPEls-SWxSa8x/s1600/miniseries.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidZWfiHlK-EPkgui9kP0f4EMNrkPiECEWCl0bR3xoKXL_J0vpTX4xCjyCZALG3Z8gvll8jmkXVDxgtceyOjsqo1mbYyyrh8XEG6CcncAEjW7ZtcZ2nIekoSSFOTSlY53XoPEls-SWxSa8x/s1600/miniseries.png" height="243" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm going to cover a different topic every day (Mon. - Sat.). The topics will ONLY include things I have personally learned about, tried &/or used. Topics will include everything from behavior cards, clip charts, Class Dojo, Parent Communication, Student Engagement and Organization. I hope you will reply and let me know your feelings about the things I'm posting about. </div>
